From your description, these sound like custom macro buttons. I think you may have to recreate them. One other possibility, however, is that the document you now have is not associated with the same template (.dot) file.
If the buttons were in your Normal.dot, either it has been replaced or regenerated without them, or your document(s) are based on a different template. To find out what template your doc is based on, press Alt+T,I and look in the top window (or go to Tools/Templates and Add-ins).
