Instead of dragging, I can think of three alternative routes.
One, is to open your .rtf doc in Word and save it as a .doc. Two, is to Select All in your .rtf doc, copy, and paste into a new Word doc. Third, is to open a new Word doc and Insert/Object/Text from file from your .rtf. (The old 2003 shortcut works, Alt+I,L.) Does this resolve your problem?
