Custom autocorrect issues with capitalisation

Hi guys



I have added a custom autocorrect to Word 2010, to convert the use of 99mTc to superscript the 99m part (apologies, but I can't seem to locate the superscript option in this message box and copying/pasting removed it anyway, but as shown in the line saying "symbolised by..." in this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technetium-99m ).

This works to correct a variety of capitalisations, such as 99MTC, 99mTC and 99Mtc, even 99MtC, which is awesome.

However, it doesn't appear to work for 99mtc (the only combination I have tried that it hasn't worked), where no capitals are used at all. This is actually the one that would be most beneficial to use, as it requires less button pressing to make a letter capitalised.

I have tried adding this as an additional autocorrect, but it defaults to 99mTc in the autocorrect options in Options - Proofing.

Any ideas why this is the case, or how to fix it?

I've also just discovered a similar issue with 123I, where I have created an autocorrect to superscript the 123, which only works if I follow it with a capital I instead of a lowercase i. Obviously, with a single letter, there aren't many variations on this to test like the 99mTc example above. It appears though that word doesn't like autocorrect anything I add which is totally lowercase. Yet won't let me add a lower case example in Proofing is a example exists with a capital already.

I tried it in 2013 and had no trouble; I think it should work in 2010. Is it possible that you are selecting plain text rather than formatted text, or that a similar shortcut for one of the other versions is intervening? Make sure formatted text is chosen and choose a shortcut that shares none of the characters in your others.

I have just redone it, made sure I definitely selected formatted text (I had to because of the superscript, so I must have done before also), and I still have the same effect.

I have only chosen one shortcut in both cases, which is 99mTc or 123I, however, if I try to add a different capitalisation to Proofing, it automatically selects the current one in the list, implying to me that I capitalisation doesn't influence the shortcut. Yet typing the shortcut in the document without a capital (at any place, doesn't have to be the same place as the original shortcut) doesn't work.

It's largely through lazy typing that I am trying to fix this, ironic considering I am typing more here than I would have to press Shift in my document But it's also curiosity as well now.

For the reason you provide, I again suggest using a different shortcut than the one(s) you have. I have had shortcuts act this way, seemingly anomalously giving a result I didn't want, until I realized that I had created a similar shortcut and forgotten it. The same may apply with macro shortcuts, where a 2-stroke shortcut intervenes while I am trying to type a 3-stroke one, because the first 2 strokes were the same.

These are the only shortcuts I have made, and I can't find any other shortcuts that exist in the list that start with similar numbers (e.g. 99 or something), and the typing of the lowercase version doesn't make the text into another shortcut either. Strange.

It's not a major issue for me, so I can live with having to capitalise one of the letters in the shortcut. Thank you for your help though.
