Default Delete does not bring second sentence closer to first sentence

When I copy and paste something into Word 2013, the Delete button does nothing in the sense of bringing a (I'll call it the second sentence) closer to the first.
Can one, two or three please advise as what I should do to make that work. Thanks!
(Remember please - do type slowly in order for me to understand)
