Stefan,

Thanks, but that shows one how to set it up. My question is HOW DO YOU USE IT?

How does one type something and start the next paragraph at the indent and numbering they want.

You apply numbering levels by applying the corresponding paragraph style to text.

Note that if you set up numbering with headings (Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.), the default as you press Enter is to apply Normal style (a non-heading style), which will stop the numbering. You can fix this by changing the "Style for following paragraph" setting in the Modify Style dialog box for each heading style or you can use a set of nine other styles. Using different styles makes sense if you don't really want a list of headings.

To display the Modify Style dialog box: Press Ctrl+Shift+S to display the Apply Styles pane. Type in the name of the style that you want to change, and then click the Modify button.

Still not working right. I've been trying to make changes in someone else's document and highlight the changes. Hitting returns, tabs or delete does not line up to anything.

Even when I try to modify it without saving and highlighting the changes, it doesn't work.

As I hit returns, it doesn't line up with anything, and the letter doesn't change appropriately.

I've attached a file that doesn't work. How would one add Item 4 after "peoples account" maintaining the formatting, and the current Item 4 (Associate) would change to 5?

Is there a rock solid tutorial or UTube that explains how this works.

Your example suggests that you don't want this to be heading numbering, but you should still set up numbering attached to paragraph styles. You can create nine styles yourself and then associate them with levels in a multilevel list, as discussed in Shauna Kelly's article. (As an alternative, you can use built-in styles, for example the ones in the List Number series.)

No matter which set of styles you choose, you create numbering from the start via Home tab | Multilevel List | Define New List Style, create the numbering for each level and then associate paragraph styles. In other words, a total of ten styles will be involved in the process (nine paragraph styles plus one list style).

To apply the numbering to text paragraphs, apply the appropriate paragraph style. Often, using the Apply Styles pane (Ctrl+Shift+S) is the easiest approach.

It doesn't matter how you use them if you don't have them set up correctly in the first place. The way to do that is to follow the directions at How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly as already recommended. Once you have them set up correctly, then you would change the style to the style with your top level (likely Heading 1).
