I have a manuscript organized into chapters, with the style Heading 1 being used for the chapter titles.
I would like to create a running head, where the current chapter title appears in the header. Unfortunately, some of the chapter titles are just too long for the header and won't fit in there. Is there any way to create a running head with shortened versions of the chapter titles, either manually or automatically? I googled for this problem and found a couple of methods, but I have to admit I didn't understand them! Can anybody explain this in a simple way for dummies like me? |

What you could do is (a) create another Style that looks like the relevant Chapter title Style, except for any numbering; (b) move the overflow text into a paragraph using that Style; then (c) press Ctrl-Alt-Enter at the end of the Chapter title paragraph to join the two using what Word calls a 'Style Separator'. This way only the shorter part of the title will be included in the header.
Instead of (c), you could just format the Chapter title's paragraph break as hidden text. That has the advantage of working on Macs, where the 'Style Separator' isn't supported.
