Question Chapter titles (Heading 1 style) are too long for running head

I have a manuscript organized into chapters, with the style Heading 1 being used for the chapter titles.

I would like to create a running head, where the current chapter title appears in the header. Unfortunately, some of the chapter titles are just too long for the header and won't fit in there.

Is there any way to create a running head with shortened versions of the chapter titles, either manually or automatically?

I googled for this problem and found a couple of methods, but I have to admit I didn't understand them!

Can anybody explain this in a simple way for dummies like me?
