Default Exhibit numbering

1) How do I automatically update exhibit numbering in a word document if I add exhibits in the document at different points?
2) How do I automatically update the text in the document to reference the new exibit numbering (like when I say see exhibit 4, but it's now exhibit 5)

3) Does this all automatically refresh?

If you use Captions for the Exhibits and cross-reference them, Word will update the cross-references if you add/delete or move the exhibits and their captions. Likewise, if you use Word's Heading Styles. All you should need do to update the cross-references is Ctrl-A, F9, or print the document.

Default Cross reference a caption

how do you cross reference a caption? If I say see Figure X

and below is the caption

Figure 1: Margins are higher

How do I cross reference within the text.

Also, can I change the word "figure" to exhibit?

If you insert a Figure caption, then you cross-reference it via Insert|Cross-reference>Figure.

When inserting captions, via References|Insert Caption, Word gives you the option to create a new Caption type. You could create a new type named 'Exhibit'. Then you'd cross-reference that via Insert|Cross-reference>Exhibit.

Default Cross reference exhibit

Thank you. But now, it is also including the title of the figure. I just want it to say Figure 1. Not Figure 1: Margins are top...
How do I get it to just reference Figure 1

Did you look at the cross-reference options? The one you've chosen is the default (entire caption). The next item in the drop-down is 'only label and number'...
