Post How to insert "hints" on where I am in a document?

Hi everyone!

I have been recently writing a 155 pages manual with lots of similar sections. My problem now is, when I am going through the open printed document, it is difficult to understand where I am reading.

So I wanted to insert some kind of "hints" or "indicators" or I don't know the correct word for it on the write or top margin that would indicate my position in the document (e.g. "Section 1: Menu 12" - heading of the section).

I would appriciate if someone can share his ot her knowledge on this.

Thank you.

Iuliia

First, try right-clicking on the status bar at the bottom of your screen. You can display much information about the document and your current position there by checking options.

Second, try displaying the Navigation pane. View Tab > Navigation Pane (checkbox). The navigation pane is especially helpful if you have been using the built-in heading styles to organize your document. Why use Microsoft Word’s built-in heading styles? by Shauna Kelly

These headings will also show up as you use the vertical scroll bar to scroll through your document.

You could also use Headers and Footers in your document itself to fulfill this function -- especially if you use the StyleRef Field. These will help not only someone reading your document on screen but also those reading the printed version.
