It is possible that the Find window was dragged off your screen some how.
What happens when you use Ctrl+H instead of Ctrl+F? Are you launching Find from the Edit menu? If in your document you can see a term and press Ctrl+F, then type the first three letters of the term and press the Enter key, what happens?
