Question Clear All Formatting in Word 7

Hi:

I don't know how to strip all the formatting from a document. I'm trying to condense a document I imported with pictures and lots of boxes. At the same time, I'm trying to stop Word from automatically inserting an extra line within paragraphs (in a second document), even tho I have set it to single line. I'm a serious vanilla user. Don't want to use the bells and whistles. Words and very simple formatting -- font, margins, lines, tabs -- are all that matter to me.

Hoping someone here can help.

Many thanks,
Jane

You would perhaps be happier using Works instead of Word.

In Word, imported documents are usually a mess as far as formatting goes. They may look fine but trying to make changes can be a real headache.

To answer your direct question: to remove all direct formatting from Word:
Ctrl+A to select all
Ctrl+Q to remove paragraph level formatting
Ctrl+Spacebar to remove font-level formatting

I would be surprised if this gives you the result you want, though.

If you are going to continue using Word, I would recommend doing a bit of study. You will be much happier and more efficient. Trying to use Word without using its tools is like trying to push a rope. It fights back and gets tangled.

Hi Charles:

Thanks for responding. Actually, I've used Word almost since its inception and have in past lives worked with many of its features. I just don't want them now. My very functional Word XP died with my old computer and my new computer came with Word 7. XP had an easy way to rip all the formatting out of things and it was remarkably good at it. I just can't find the right button for it here. I did know about the solution you suggested and had tried it with no luck. That's why I thought I would ask on this forum. Ditto the extra line spacing problem. I've followed the instructions but haven't fixed the problem.

I'll take a look at the link you gave me. Glad to have it.

Thanks again,
Jane

For basic stuff (font, margins, lines, tabs), you could use WordPad - it's free and comes with every Windows PC.
