Word 2010: how to save numbered list indent to 0?
I tried several methods to change the indentation for numbered/ordered list, but it seems that the changes is only for the current list I'm working on. If I exit Word and goes back in the same document again, the list will indent to its default value, which is 0.25" for numbered list. Is this a bug or I'm not doing it right?
This is what I did: 1) created a list, right click anywhere in the list, then select Adjust list indent, then set the indent to 0 2) opened the template Normal.dotm in C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templat es, then created a list, right click anywhere in the list, then select Adjust list indent, then set the indent to 0, then removed the list and saved the template (had to save with another name, delete the old one and rename it back to Normal.dotm) With either method, when I tried to create a new list (by clicking the list icon below the menu bar), it still shows the indent on the number. What I'm doing wrong, how can I remove the indent for numbered/ordered list permanently? Thanks for your comment/suggestion Michael |

If you create a paragraph Style for your numbered list, with the indenting set as desired, you can add further paragraphs via the Style name at any time and your formatting preferences will be retained.
Note: Trying to override a different Style definition (as it appears you've been doing) is never a good idea.

line 1 line 2 ... then I highlight this list and click the numbered list icon under the menu, the list will be with the style I created or I have to go to the Style list and select the numbered style I just created? What I'm trying to do is remove the indentation of the numbered list icon so every time I click on it, it will apply numbered list without indent to my selected list. How can I do this? Thanks for your comment/suggestion Michael |

Here's a simple way:
1. Format a paragraph that currently has the 'Normal' Style applied to look the way to want all numbered paragraphs at your first level to appear. 2. Click on Style>New Style and give the paragraph a meaningful name (the default will be 'Style1') and set the 'Style based on' to 'Normal'. 3. Change the format to the way you want all numbered paragraphs at your second level to appear. 4. Click on Style>New Style and give the paragraph a meaningful name and set the 'Style based on' to the Style you used for the previous Style. Done

- create style as you suggested above - open up the style list and leave the newly created style in the opened window - when there's a bullet list to apply the new style, just click the style created and the bullet with no indent will be there. Just a curiosity, why I can't change the bullet indent in menu icon? Is it a bug or you are not supposed to change it? Thanks again for your suggestion. Michael |

You don't need to leave the Style list open; you could add the Style to the gallery or, if you add the Styles combobox to the QAT, you could just type some/all of its name there.
