Unhappy Spell Check some pages not others

I am working on a document in Word. I noticed that when I type a crazy word (such as trzrying) it is not underlined by spell check. However, if I type the same word on the first page of the same document (or any other misspelled word) it IS underlined.

I have checked the language, have spellcheck on (which it why it works on the first page), but this is driving me batty. It is an important document and I don't want mistakes.

Thanks a million!

Make sure that "Do not check spelling or grammar" (Tools | Language | Set Proofing Language) has not been applied to the text that Word won't spellcheck. See also http://wordfaqs.mvps.org/MasterSpellCheck.htm.

Did this fix your problem?

You do have a Tools menu unless you have something very wrong with your version of Word.

See Mastering the Spelling Checker.

[Edit]
Try clicking on a misspelled word and pressing Shift+F1. You should see something like this:

Under Font formatting does it say : Language: Do not check spelling or grammar?

The screenshot above is from a computer with only one language installed, with spelling and grammar installed and active. This is a character(font)-level formatting in Word.

As Charles wrote, since you are using Office XP, and therefore Word 2002, you should certainly have a Tools menu, unless you have customized the menu bar of course.

Which specific option did you change for the selected text? Did it make a difference?

No it did not fix it. As for menus, I only have a Home, Insert, Page Layout, References, Mailings, Review, View, Developer, and Add-ins. On my Mac I have a tools menu, but I never have this problem on my Mac. On my PC I have no "menus" at all, just the tabs.

Where do I find these menus using Microsoft? on mac they are at the top of the screen. On MS I can't find them anywhere....

If you have Home, Insert, Page Layout, References, Mailings, Review, View, Developer, and Add-ins you do NOT have Office XP. It sounds like you have Office 2007. What version of Word do I have?

Is there a yellow-orange button to the left of Home?

Look on your Review tab. Look under the Language button/menu.

There is a yellow orange paste button below and an orange>yellow>green>blue (in descending size) windows button hove, both on the left. I am sorry, I don't know what version or where to find it (thought it was XP). I am used to mac and the older version of the other MS Word.

I did the entire review, languages, spell check, everything (multiple times).

No worries. I may try pasting it into a new document and things... just a bit of a pain.

Thanks for your help!

Pasting into a new document will likely continue and/or compound your problems. You have Office 2007. That is the only version with the pizza button.

Follow the following steps, exactly, without skipping anything or guessing.

With your problem document open...
  1. Press Ctrl-A to select all text in the body of your document.
  2. Click on the Review Tab
  3. Click on the Set Language Button (on the left side of the ribbon)
  4. There is a checkbox for "Do Not Check Spelling or Grammar."
  5. Check it until it is clear. Make sure that in doing this it is checked at least once. If there is any color or gray in the checkbox, it is not clear.
  6. Click on OK.
  7. Press F7 to check spelling.

What happens?

Thanks!

I had tried that before.... It does check spelling when I chose to check spelling, but it won't check it as I type (I would like those underlines so I don't need to go through it all). It still only underlines words on the first page...

Oh well. I guess I will go through a spell check of my 300 pages of typos when I'm done

If there are "too many" spelling errors in a document, Word may stop spellchecking as you type, but you should see a notification when it happens.
