This is a very messy DOCUMENT not a template. You create a template from which you base your DOCUMENT from in Word using File New.
I have set a template up with great difficulty - this is a messy format. Nevertheless, I suggest you read Shauna Kelly's website relating to numbering and multilevel lists. You should also learn about documents and templates. You may then be able to use the template I set up. I am also not Santa! ![]() The .docx file is the File New from the template file (even though I kept your text in the dotx file) List Headings v1.dotx.docx (needs to have .docx removed on tail of name) and is the Template. I have removed the template from the File New document and replaced with Normal but you can reattach the template when you download and call what you want and remove text in the template. Any questions please ask. Regards janinecrutch.com Last edited by jec1; 12-04-2013 at 03:51 AM. Reason: attach template and File New Document |

Hmmm, my first impression was this was sort of an intense reply. But looking at it on the computer (got the original on my phone) I see you've tried to help, so think you.
I used a template as Shauna Kelly said. And the whole document uses the styles in the template, Headings 1, 2,3,4,5. And they all seem to be working, except the list style. I can drop down the multilevel list, and the style is listed there by name, so I used it throughout. I'll look over your fixes and see where I went wrong. And again, the first version of this might have been hasty, I didn't see the work and thought you put in to helping me. Thank you. Steve |

Your example document contains unresolved track changes, which probably explains the numbering issues you are seeing. Auto numbering as well as field results may not update correctly until you have accepted (or rejected) changes.

I didn't think of that. I inherited the original document with tracking changes on, and I guess it's still doing that even though I hide them from view. resolve all that and maybe the doc will be neater., in addition to going through all the stuff Janine did for me.
I appreciate all the help. I write a lot of documents, but have always just gotten doing all the formatting, numbering, etc. manually. But I'm trying to build a template that works that I just use over and over. And as you guys know better than I, there is a substantial learning curve! Thanks! Steve |
