Well, if you aren't happy using Word and find one of the main contenders inadequate … all I can do is wish you luck <g>
fwiw, I have regularly used LibreOffice –I carry no torch for it, mind – to open .doc and .docx files I have then edited with track changes and returned to the client; no problems noted.
