Fail to insert “table of content”,
I tried to insert “table of content” but got the attached message. This occurs despite having “heading 1” style on the same file (also attached) What might be the issue here? Thank you Best Jamal |

Maybe a wild guess, but have you checked in the TOC generation dialogue to make sure that Heading styles are checked for inclusion?

Jamal,
It doesn't matter whether the Heading1 Style exists in the Styles list. What matters is whether it has been used in the document. I can't see any indication of that in the images you posted.

Many thanks Ulodesk for the help, Sure, the table of content is expected to have up to three levels (attached) What other issues should I check? |

I have selected some text (shown in the attached screenshots) which indicates that it belongs to the “heading 1” style. This proves that the “heading 1” is used in the document. What other issues should I check? |

What do you get if, in the body of the document, you press Ctrl-F9, type 'TOC' between the field braces, thus { TOC }, then press F9 to update the field?

But as macropod mentions are you sure that heading 1 is actually USED in the document.
Plus, just as a wild shot, make sure that heading 1 is checked as the style to use for the TOC. After all you can use ANY style to generate a TOC. I personally never use Heading 1 for my TOC, because I never use the default heading 1 (or 2 or 3) for my headings. I use my own styles. So maybe (again a wild shot) click the modify button and make sure the Heading 1 style is checked as the style to use fo the TOC. AND that the Heading 1 style is actually used in the document. |

At the end, I found out that no text in the document belongs to headings. The black solid square (attached) is the sign that a text belong to a heading. now it works fine. Best Jamal |
