Unhappy page numbering

I want to start my page numbering on page 5 of my book but I can't find how to do this? Word only lets me enter 0 for the first page then numbers the next four which I don't want. Basically I want the fifth page to be page 1. How do I do this?

I did exactly as the instructions said but all that happens is I get a number 1 on the page I want to start at but no other numbers on the following pages?

Any ideas?

Hi JimP

It's OK now. I went through it all again and got the same results but then on the next page I clicked on Page Number and chose Bottom of Page again and it inserted all the even numbers on the pages. I then went to the next page and did the same again and all the even numbers were then added? Don't know why it did this but it's sorted so I'm happy.

Thanks

Each section of Word has three different headers (and footers) whether you see them or not. You get these by having at least three pages and checking the options for "different first page" and "different even and odd."

See this summary of the rules.

Note, when you use the Insert Page Number function, it will REPLACE a header or footer, not simply insert a page number in that header or footer.
