Hi All,
I am almost embarrased to ask this questions but i have been scratching my head for hours trying to figure this out. How can you change the formatting (colour only) of the page numbers of the Table of Contents. Basically i have created a TOC with the correct formatting for TOC1-3 levels. My TOC1 is colour Blue which also makes the page number blue. I want my page number for that TOC level to be black (or something different). I have attached a screenshot of the TOC (top is what it is at the moment, bottom is what i want it to be). I know i can manually change the colour of the page numbers, but when i update the TOC next it will just go back to the unwanted format. The reason for this is that TOC2 is just a black colour and having the page numbers different colours looks strange..i know... OCD much?? Anyways, surely there should be a simple way to achive this via the TOC customising window....right? Regards, Adam |

Hi Adam,
You can't change only the page #s - by design they must share the character formatting of the rest of the TOC entry.

Technically of course it has nothing to do with it being a TOC (therefore it has nothing to do with the customising window). The TOC uses a style. Styles do not inherently have DIFFERENT formatting within the paragraph. You have to apply a character style to the page numbers, or manually change them.
You will have to select the page numbers and change them, either manually or apply a character style. |

Since the TOC is a field, any such change will be deleted when the TOC is next updated. The same applies even if you expose the TOC's embedded PAGEREF field code for the page # (which you can do by selecting the page # and pressing Shift-F9) and try to apply a different format to it via a Charformat switch.

... and, when you apply formatting to the page numbers, that formatting will disappear next time the TOC is updated.

Yeah, I guess I should have mentioned that any REgeneration of TOC (an update) would of course REgenerate the original style characteristics. Any changes (manual or character style or Charformat) will only apply to the current iteration of the TOC fields.
