Default Best Way to Create New Styles -- Using Style Based On Feature for Ripple Effect?

I use certain heading styles with a particular paragraph formatting as a group, for example various APA style heading levels together with an APA styled paragraph.

I want the styles to be set up so that they can be easily modified to match any font. Perhaps there's a way to set them up so no modification is necessary, by cleverly using the "based on" feature.

I'm also wondering if I were to use Normal as the "Style based on" for the group, would the group of styles that I import from my, say, Normal.dotm template, take on the Normal font features of the target document (such an effect would be ideal for my purposes)?

Many thanks.
