Default connectors between cells in pasted Excel table

I've inherited a .doc I need to update – add some content, save out as .docx for a grateful posterity.

The first screenshot shows what I started from: it looks as though individual tables have been placed in a graphics frame and connectors drawn in by hand.

The second shows as far as I've got with a more integrated approach, drawing all the tables in a single Excel sheet … but then I have absolutely no idea how to add connectors in a single layer :-{

Hints and tips welcome.
