![]() Reviewing a W2010 template yesterday, I came upon a numbering anomaly in the headings. Levels 7 & 8 are for, respectively, appendices and attachments. Each has the relevant word preceding the number, and each begins its numbering with 1. I discovered that, while the numbering works perfectly as long as the appendices precede attachments, as is standard, the numbering goes off if the order is reversed. For instance, if Attachment 1 precedes Appendix 1, the appendix headline begins its numbering with 2. However, even if two attachments precede it, the Appendix headline still begins with 2. Example attached. I can see no problem in the list style from which these are generated. Anyone? |

This is because Word is particular about the order in which you apply styles that are part of the same multilevel list. If you try to skip a level, which is what happens when Heading 8 is applied before Heading 7, the numbering will be incorrect.

Thanks, Stephan. I suspected that might be, but couldn't account for the 2 staying the same despite additional prior heading. At least now I can send a memo out to my colleagues, on switching the two styles in the list style o f their local template if necessary.

Indeed, if you need to switch the order between styles, you will have to reassign numbering levels of the list.

Yes. By "switching", I meant relabeling the Level 7 as Attachment and Level 8 as Appendix in the list style of the template copy to be used for the specific project.
We keep a master custom template locked safely away from meddlers. Each project starts with its own copy of the template, which is adjusted, if necessary, according to any submission requirements for the documents made from it, e.g., font, font size, margins. |
