I have a document which I used to us in Word 2003. The 1st page has a a line of text, which also appears on the second page. I copied the text from the first page, and used paste special, to paste an unformatted text link on the second page. The text on the second page would always update automatically to match the text on the first page.

The same document in Word 2013 will not automatically update this field, even though the 'Update method for selected link' is set as automatic.

To avoid complication, I have experimented in a new blank document as follows:



1. Type a word.
2. Select the word and copy to clipboard.
3. A few lines down, select paste special.
4. Paste link as unformatted text.

At this point any changes to the first word are automatically updated in the second linked text.

5. Save document and exit.
6. Re-open document.
7. Edit the first word.

Occasionally the second section of text will update the first time you re-open it, but close the document and re-open a second time, and it will no longer update.

Am I missing a far simpler method, or is this a fault in Word 2013.
