word count differs from properties to inside doc.

Hi there,

This is my first post.
I just singed up because I couldn't find an answer for my question searching the web.
I received a word document from a client and it shows 926 from the properties window and 1,092 inside the document.
Could this be a bug or is there any other explanation?

It's quite possible the Windows Explorer properties has a different definition of a word than Word does. Bear in mind that Windows Explorer has to use algorithms that can work with any file type, whereas Word needs only to work with its own documents. Windows Explorer also doesn't count content in Word document headers, footers, footnotes or endnotes. Note also, that the count from within Word can vary according to what settings you're using.

Earlier versions of Word did not count footnotes in the word count. Word 2010 does (although there may be an option for this).

The word count in Windows properties is usually different from that in Word and the one in Word is accurate AFAIK. For very short documents (single page, no headers, footers, footnotes, etc.) they will be the same.

When an attorney files a brief in the appellate courts in Wisconsin, that attorney must personally attest to the number of words in the brief (or at least that it does not exceed a certain maximum), so this is something I keep track of.

They're not counted by the NUMWORDS field, for example, in any version. Whether they're counted in the word-count pop-up depends whether you check that option on the pop-up.
