Default How to specify Document Title from the body of my Document

Hello,

I know how to go in and manually change the title on a document. But I would like to be able to point the Title Field to a certain area on my document, and have it set the title from there. Much like how we are able to set certain text as Heading styles, I want to set certain text as the Title.

I don't really understand how fields work, so if anyone thinks that's the way to go, I'm all ears.

The ultimate purpose of this is I am creating a template and I want the footer to be updated by information in the body of the document, instead of having to remember to change the footer. So if I'm on the wrong track, you can redirect me

{ STYLEREF "Title" } Insert a StyleRef field in your footer after formatting your title using the Title style. Note, you can change the formatting of the Title Style so it looks however you want. This use is the major purpose of the StyleRef field although it has other uses. If you use one for your headings in the footer, your footer will change everytime your heading changes as well.

In a template, you could put a MacroButton Field with text of "Type Title Here" formatted in the Title Style. That way your footer can be in your template as well. To be really fancy, put the footer in your template and then click the option for a different first page. The footer will disappear (since it is not on the first page). When the template is more than a page in length the footer will be there.

Charles,

Thanks for your reply. It makes a lot of since, that if I have just one item formatted a certain way, then I could call it with a StyleRef. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong though. I created a brand new style via QuickStyles, then went in my footer and inserted a Quick Parts Field of StyleRef, and selected my newly-created style, and my result was an error stating there's no text of that style in my document (which is in my cover page, if that matters). I clicked on the Title text and confirmed that it is indeed registering as my new Style.

What might I be doing wrong?

If your Title is already in a header or footer, neither a StyleRef field nor a Ref field will find it because headers and footers are not "in the document."

Ok, that helps me rephrase my original ask then.

By whatever means, I would like a line in the body of my document, specifically in my cover sheet to be placed into the footer. So whenever I start my new document and begin filling out my cover sheet, my footer gets populated as well.

Is that doable?

Yes. However, that (original) line cannot be in a header or footer. Sometimes an entire page of material is placed in a header or footer, especially in a cover page.

Click on the original line. Is the Header/Footer tools tab displayed on the Ribbon? If so, you are in a header or footer. You need to move that material into the body of the document. I suspect the same problem would arise if the original line were placed in a text box or frame.

Might this not be a case for using a document property?

Using a document property just adds another layer. The StyleRef field will work fine.

However, if a document property is used, then you would use a DocProperty field to display the contents elsewhere.

True, but can be used for identifying and retrieving documents – that's why I have acquired the habit of using properties for that sort of meta-information.

Oh, I use Doc Properties, too, especially in templates. They help me trace the origin of documents. Just not needed for putting a title in the header. Also StyleRef fields update virtually instantly while DocProperty fields do not.
