I believe you are referring to the Document Map (Word 97-2007) or the Navigation pane (Word 2010 and later).
To display the Document Map: Click View | Document Map. To display the Navigation pane: Click View tab | Navigation Pane. To see all headings, you may have to right-click and choose that option (as some heading levels may be hidden by default).
