My office just upgraded to 2007, and I finally figured out how to show the number of pages in the header of a Word document (as in, Page 3 of 17). I thought this might be useful to somebody who hadn't found it.
In the earlier versions of Word I've used, this is easy, but in Word 2007 you have to go through some hoops. Choose the Insert tab of the "Ribbon", then click on Page Number (in the Header & Footer section) and choose Top of Page or Bottom of Page. Scroll down the formats shown to the "Page X of Y" section and click on the version you want (left side, center, or right side). You may want to remove the boldface. |

It's July 2013, but I found this very simple answer at techtalkz.com by Graham Mayor - Word MVP. (From MS Help)
On the blue toolbar of your document, look at the block with page layout and view styles. If the middle icon, a page with a tiny globe on it, is selected, you will NOT be getting page numbers. This is a WEB layout. Go to the first icon and select it. This is the Print layout and in the toolbar it will give the number of document pages. As you know, getting the Help search to understand what you want can be tricky. After several tries in which I had said things like "show pages in a document / total pages" etc., I realized that I didn't want help in the document, I wanted help in the toolbar. Using that term brought up a search with Mr. Mayor's blessedly concise and simple information. Best of luck to all you Searchers out there, and thanks to all you Knowledgeable Ones out there for all your help! |

This is not an answer to your remark but for others who might find this thread.
The basis for page numbering in all versions of Word is the PAGE field and its variations. In Word 2007 (2010-2013) there is a command to insert page numbers which is really a command to replace an existing header/footer with one that contains page numbering. It is under the Insert tab. If some of the options are missing, look at Page numbering problems Word 2007 & 2010 For an examination of things you can do with the PAGE field, see How to control the page numbering in a Word document |
