This is not an answer to your remark but for others who might find this thread.

The basis for page numbering in all versions of Word is the PAGE field and its variations.

In Word 2007 (2010-2013) there is a command to insert page numbers which is really a command to replace an existing header/footer with one that contains page numbering. It is under the Insert tab.
