![]() Hi there, wondering if anyone knows how to update a Master document, so that edits made to the Master are transferred to the source documents? To clarify, I have about 100 individual docs, put together into a Master document with Include fields. I want to revise only the Master instead of all the individual source files, and be able to send all the changes back to the individual source files with one click. I thought pressing Ctrl Shift F7 would work, but it does nothing. Pressing F9 puts the unrevised source files back into the Master, thereby erasing all my revisions. Thanks very much! Joyce |

The mantra used to be "A master document has only two possible states: Corrupt, or just about to be corrupt. And that is why we say that the only possible fix to a master document is “'don't use it!'”
John McGhie, MVP, on the Microsoft Word MVP FAQ Site There's a less pessimistic assessment (plus a lot of tips) at http://techwhirl.com/ms-word-master-documents/ but this still says there should not be any content in a master document. When you say "edits made to the master" and mention updating fields, I'm not sure what your approach has been. Good luck, anyway, and I'm curious to see what the better-informed have to say on this topic.
[ps] a few hours later, I've had a coffee and read the excerpt from the URL I gave: scary stuff, and makes me heartily glad I don't have to use Word for long documents =:-} Last edited by eNGiNe; 07-12-2013 at 05:36 AM. |

Thanks a lot eNGINe, it looks like it's not even possible to do what I'm doing. I'm finding it's actually easier to work with one long normal document, then split it into the individual documents when I'm done the revisions. Even if I have to do that a couple of times before the project is over. So that's what I'm doing now. I've wasted a lot time though...sigh.

To add to the previous response, I would only use the Master Document "feature" to print the final product. You dare not do any editing while in Master Document form and should only work with backup copies if you use this "feature."
