How do I delete strange characters from a document.

Hi.

I have been using MS Word since Win 95 and never seen these characters before:

and am wondering what they are for and how to delete them from a document. I believe the first dot is a space character. I have tried to highlight them so as to delete them, but to no avail. They are used throughout the document I am trying to edit and can find no reference anywhere.

I could make a new document and cut and paste the text, but being a large document, it would take some time.
