The third of my three computers has just gone haywire, and I think it may be because I type in several languages that use diacritical marks, and some in other alphabets. Has anyone else had this problem? Shouldn't I be able to use various alphabets without corrupting a Word file?

In what way does the document seem corrupt? What are the symptoms?

Now when I go to retrieve the document, my computer tells me it is being used by another user. There is no other user! I cannot open anything and on the odd chance that I do open it, I cannot make changes. This has happened before with two other computers, so I am wondering if the creation of documents with other alphabets and diacritical marks is causing a problem.

You probably have to exit Word and clean up temporary files that have been left behind. See http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm. See if that makes a difference.
