Formfields have a bookmark property that you can cross-reference. To get the cross-references to update automatically, check the 'calculate on exit' property.

Content Controls don't have either a bookmark property or a 'calculate on exit' property. To cross-reference them you'd need to apply your own bookmarks and use a ContentControlOnExit macro to get the cross-references to them to update. Alternatively you could use mapped Content Controls, which I think the link I provided discusses.

You should not use Formfields and Content Controls in the same document.
