Default Numbering style

I am creating a project, where I am using Heading 1 for my main titles and then heading 2 for sub titles etc. I am trying to use the numbering style for my sub titles, but I cannot get the numbering to work properly. For example my page looks like this

Chapter 1 Intro
1.1 Project Description
1.2 Background
1.3 Conclusion

Chapter 2 Research
1.4 Research on this
1.5 Research on that
1.6 Research on both

How can I get it so it numbers it correctly, so instead of the above it looks like

Chapter 1 Intro
1.1 Project Description
1.2 Background
1.3 Conclusion

Chapter 2 Research
2.1 Research on this
2.2 Research on that
2.3 Research on both

Apply numbering to all headings, including Heading 1, but hide the numbering for Heading 1. Since you are using MacWord, I can't give you detailed instructions. The general principles are described at http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...numbering.html.

It is important to follow the steps in Shauna's article all the way through. Automatic numbering in Word is broken, especially when applied using the buttons. In one-use documents this usually is not a problem. It is when documents are edited that the problems usually pop up.

You need to attach all levels you might ever use to appropriate styles at one time. If you want to understand what is going on rather than just follow the steps, look up John McGhie's article listed in the chapter below. AFAIK, Shauna's steps integrate John's advice very well.
