Unable to insert page number

It does.

The article was written for 2007 to distinguish it from non-ribbon versions of Word. The ribbon put the commands in different places from earlier versions.

Ok I followed the instructions to a tee and only the sixth page displays page 1

all other pages display no page numbers

this is the same issue I had before. what could be wrong?

If the 6th page is a new section, do you have "different first page" selected in the header/footer controls?
