Default Help me please with numbering levels

Hello,

I made 3 different headings, each for each numbering level. For example "1. Topic" will be always Heading 1, "1.1 Topic" will be always Heading 2 and "1.1.1 Topic" will be always Heading 3.

How my table of content looks:

How my options look:

I made so Level 1 have Heading 1, Level 2 has Heading 2, and so on, so why when i assign Heading 3 for my title numbers are completely off?

Sorry I don't have time right now to investigate in depth. Word's multilevel numbering is broken, at least through Word 2010, unless tied to styles.

See How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Word 2007 and Word 2010 by Shauna Kelly. When you follow her instructions (all of the steps) you get numbering that works.

Some possibilities:
- Is your Level 2 numbering set to "Restart list after:" Level 1?
- For Level 3, when you did "Enter formatting for number", did you click Level 1 followed by clicking Level 2 in the "Include level number from" box?
- you've formatted your numbers to have a period at the end - that's seems unusual. Maybe that's the problem (?)

I had similar problems as Alpina.
Shauna Kelly's method is correct, but it's easy to make a mistake when you are including the numbers from the previous levels. I found you have to be extremely careful and methodical and get the sequence right.
After a few frustrating attempts I deleted all the heading styles and slowly but carefully started from scratch, following Shauna's instructions. It worked, but it took time.

You can end up with something that looks the same in all of Word's dialogs, but is not the same, if you break the sequence of steps. You need to establish all levels in one opening of the numbering dialog.
