modified styles showing in style list

I have two documents created by separate users. One is based on a company-developed template and the other was started from scratch. When I manually modify a style, it shows in the list as the style name with a plus sign. This only shows in one of the documents but not the other. Is this a setting I can turn on and off? As our company is a stickler about using styles, I would like the list to show the modified style with the plus sign so users can see. Thanks!

A plus sign after a style name in the Styles pane suggests a style + direct formatting, not a modified style definition.

That's what I meant, just used the wrong term. So why does the plus sign show in some documents but not others?

If you don't see entries with direct formatting, the display of such entries has been turned off. In the Style Options dialog box, look at the "Select formatting to show as styles" options.

To display the dialog, click the Options link in the Styles pane.
