Sounds like your 'Open With' settings may have changed!
Right-click on the file, choose 'Open With' find Word in the list of programs (or Browse to where you installed your version of Office - default [C:/Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office 12/WINWORD.exe]), tick the box that says 'Always use this program...', say OK Does that change anything?
