Default Inserting page numbers & odd/even headers

I'm having an issue with inserting page numbers and different odd/even headers into an existing document. I am far from a beginner user, which is why this is so frustrating, hence I am looking for help! I will attempt to explain this as succinct as possible. The document is a book. I have put in page numbers beginning at chapter 1, after the prologue, title page, etc. with no problem. The page numbers are in the footer. Next I would like to insert odd/even headers, also beginning with chapter 1, which is page 1. I entered a section break at page 1, entered my odd page header and so far so good. next I enter my even page header, and when i do this it removes my even page numbers from the entire document. I cannot for the life of me get this to work properly and after trying everything I can, including starting over from scratch and following the instructions in help, it is still doing this. I am using Office 2003. Anyone out there that can help me???
