Here's a couple of screenshots to clarify the question. WYS may well be WYG, but it's not What You Asked For <g> 1. shows the selection buttons before I click on "top border", 2. shows how Word enthusiastically reinterprets this as "all borders". The second screenshot (touched up with a graphics editor) shows the top border effect I'm trying for.
