Go to File, Options (below Help). A new window appears.
Select Autocorrect Options.
Unselect 'Capitalize first letter of Sentences'

Thanks Sam - that was a great help. For the benefit of others referring to this thread, in my version of MS Word, there is a 'proofing' selection to make in the 'options' window.
