Index includes all files?

I'm starting to do an index for a book to be published on Createspace. However when I use the index template in MS Word 03, it proceeds to put the symbols in every word file on my hard drive. I can remove them of course, but isn't there a way to just see those symbols in the file I'm working on?

It may be when you are building the index in your document you are saving any changes to the NORMAL template. So when you open any other document that was created using the NORMAL template you may see the symbols in those documents also. You need to ensure that any changes you make to a document that affect its underlying template that the changes are saved for that document only. Or create a separate template for your book.
