After you have inserted the cross-reference field, edit the field code so that it includes the \t switch, and then update the field.

To edit the field code: Press Alt+F9. The cross-reference displays similar to { REF _Ref343812987 \n }. Just add \t at the end, update with F9 and then press Alt+F9 again.
