if i perform a series of actions, including typing some lines of text for example, then want to undo anything the typing 'undoes' one character at a time.
although it's not something i ever really paid much attention to before, i seem to remember that the undo drop down list on the quick access toolbar would include being able to undo a whole section of text at once, rather than one character at a time. i'm not sure if that's a very clear explanation, but if anyone does know what i mean do you have any idea what setting i might have changed, or is my memory faulty here? thanks |

I have seen Word delete single characters as well as whole words in one Undo. If there is a pattern, I haven't noticed it...
What you can do is Undo multiple steps at once, using the Undo drop down.

This seems to only be happening in one particular document. To clarify what's happening I've attached a screenshot of the undo dropdown list (letter by letter) on this doc & one of the undo dropdown in a new doc (phrase by phrase).
The doc that's 'misbehaving' has several page & section breaks inserted & a lot of bulleted lists, using a custom multilevel list I created. Apart from that it's a normal docx, so i can't see how any of that could be related to the undo function being altered. I can't find any setting or option choices anywhere for the undo function so I don't know how I can find what's been altered or how to reset it to default. This makes it a real pain to undo anything more than a few letters, especially if I use Ctrl + Z. Any help much appreciated! Edit: this only seems to be happening when I've got a footer in the doc (my name & page x of y). I copied the contents of the doc into a new doc & tested undo - it was fine, but as soon as i put in a footer the problem started again. What on earth.......?!? That is interesting. How did you create the footer (specific steps)?

Sorry about delayed response, been ve-ry busy etc. In answer to your question:
1) I double clicked in footer area & it become visible (with main text greyed out) 2) entered footer text then, design tab > header & footer group > page number > bottom of page > page x of y I've also tried it by Insert tab > footer > blank > enter text in field then > page number > bottom of page > page x of y Both ways have the same effect on the undo function. I've just discovered this: http://tinyurl.com/d4tx8x7 I think it’s a post if yours on another forum, or someone with the same name. It seems to be related to some types of page numbers, but not others!? Via the link above I found this http://tinyurl.com/clzfu2r, but the suggested solution doesn’t seem to work. |

Thanks for the follow-up.
It certainly looks like I wrote the message at http://tinyurl.com/d4tx8x7... The suggested workaround at http://tinyurl.com/clzfu2r does ring a bell, although I don't remember if it was ever confirmed.
