File corruption
Hello all,
This morning I tried to open a doc file I had been working on over the evening. I had a pretty important meeting that required me to present a diary (of sorts) to my peers that I have been keeping for the last three months. About fifty or so pages. When I came to open the document at work I was presented with pages upon pages of '□'. Fortunately I noticed a .tmp file on my memory stick and found a version that was up-to-date as to last week. I only lost a weeks amount of work. After my meeting I updated the lost entries. Thinking ahead, I thought I would save multiple copies as to not be in this predicament again. Now, at home, I have opened up the various versions of the document only to be presented with pages upon pages of nothing. Even the .tmp files are blank. What is going on? Using Word 2003/7 at work. I use Open Office at home under Ubuntu. I don't use M$ crap at home for this very reason - unreliable software. Can anyone offer any advice? I can't upload the file unfortunately as it would break data protection. Any help much appreciated. Regards, Bill |

Hi Bill,
Your attitude to Word, calling it "M$ crap" depicts someone who's opinions are informed by prejudice rather than rationality. Office is not in the habit of creating corrupt files; what you're seeing is more likely a result of working with files on USB sticks and not removing them safely. Or perhaps its your 'Open Office' software that corrupted them ... (Converting files between Open Office and MS Office is known to have problems and many Linux users would like to see MS Office for Linux to avoid such issues and to improve their productivity). Furthermore, since these are work files, I would expect there to be an in-house backup system to protect against data loss.
