In that case, the text issue is probably with the Style definitions and the numbering issue is probably with the list-level numbering formats, both of which you can correct by fixing the definitions/formats, rather than trying to modify the content directly. As you know, the latter can't be selected and, what you can't select, you can't 'Find'.
