Default Print spacing in Word document

I have created a A5 document with 6 pages and I need to print pages 6 and 1 on one sheet of A4 as the outside pages of a booklet. When I print, the print sometimes appears with inconsistent spacing - some letters abnormally close to each other and others with an abnormally large space between. I am using Word xp (2002) to create the document and the result has been seen using both an HP Photosmart 2710 and a Canon MP620. Can anyone supply the cause of this and/or tell me how to achieve normally spaced letters. I have a sample which I can scan and supply.
