Does this happen in all documents?
New documents? This is a font formatting text effect called Red Ants that was available in Word 2003 but is not in Word 2007. If it is in all text, you have this in your normal.dotm's style definition. Find your normal.dotm file and rename it with Word closed. See if that helps.
