Compatibility mode (which not related to the Word 97-2003 doc format) has nothing to do with it either (at least in Word 2010 - and that's what Jamal is using) ...

For your system, the disappearance might simply be a display driver issue. Given how new Win 8 and Office 2013 are, that would hardly be surprising (time and again, merely upgrading Office versions has highlighted display driver issues).
