hi Phyllis,
Your description suggests you have the paragraphs formatted with the 'keep lines together' and, possibly, 'keep with next' attributes. This is not Word's default arrangement. You should only apply the first of these settings to paragraphs whose content you want to avoid splitting across page breaks and the second should generally be reserved for headings. To fix this, click anywhere in the paragraph concerned, then go to Format|Paragraph>Line and Page breaks, and uncheck the the 'keep lines together' and 'keep with next' options. You should ensure the same configuration for whatever Paragraph Style you're using for the body text.
