gotcha, makes sense now. thanks. perhaps the generated eps's weren't really compatible for some reason.

Word's documentation regarding "Insert and Link" is pretty clear that, if the linked file is not found, it will just use the embedded graphic. I just ran quick test: I "Insert and Linked" a picture, saved and closed the document, deleted the picture, and reopened the document. Hitting F9 didn't give me any problems, so I'm assuming that sharing docs made with "insert and link" will work ok.
