Question Fail-safe way to print right page range?

When I use sections and tweak page numbering, it backfires and sometimes throws me off in printing. It's usually not a big deal, but when I print duplex and pagination is critical, the whole print batch is wasted.

I always forget that the page range in Word's Print dialogue box is based on the page numbers that each page will bear, not the absolute number that starts with 1 on the first page. The wisdom of this scheme is in doubt too, because how do you account for multiple sections that all start with page #1? (Yes, you can use the section identifier - e.g., s1p1 - s3p10 - but it's still not as intuitive as using the absolute page numbers.

In any event, since there doesn't seem to be a way to compel Word to accept the absolute page numbers in printing, is there a fail-safe (or fool-proof) way to make sure that what you are asking to print is what you want to print? A macro perhaps?

You've already identified the only failsafe method - Section # Page# referencing. If this is a regular issue, perhaps you need to make that kind of referencing your default. The only other way is to select the desired range, then print the 'selection'.

Default Printing Selection

Paul, is it not the case that printing a selection of pages does not print the header and footers?

Yes, I believe that to be the case.

Ok, then I guess the only way to exactly specify the page range is by appending the section number, since printing a selection of pages leaves out the header and footer.

Since we're talking about printing, you could generate a .pdf from your document and then use Acrobat [or some other] Reader to print a selection of pages. This would sidestep Word's curious behaviour of omitting footers.
